When I left Korea I had the pleasure of the company of two pen pals (I shall call them John and Mark).
I mentioned in the last post introducing the whole penpal saga by saying that I had two “Pen Pals” from South Korea.
John and Mark were two very different types of people. I have a lot to say about both of them but it was so long ago that I feel I’m going to struggle to get the facts out straight sk if it feels a bit disjointed, forgive me.
Today I’m going to tell you a bit about John.
John was very chatty, confident and fun. He had a bit of a bad boy look. A real cool kid. He had a tribal looking tattoo down one arm starting at the shoulder and stopping just above his elbow. It was symbolic for him. You could almost say it was his way of reminding himself about what his goals were in life. It was deep.
I got along with John like a house on fire. We would often message each other throughout the night and send voice messages to each other as if we were actually talking on the phone. It was a rush. There were a number of times our “conversations” had me laughing. I couldn’t get enough of this guy. I felt young at heart when we were talking.
After a couple of months passed we were still talking. John and I even made a promise with each other. He was going for his fireman’s exams at the start of the following year. If he passed his exams he was going to come visit.
I was excited. How could I not be? There was a chance I was going to meet this really cool guy I had been talking with for months. My hopes were high.
At the end of that year everything changed though. For some reason unbeknownst to me, John stopped messaging one day. I sent him a couple of messages to see if he might respond after some time but alas, he did not even read them. Honestly, I kind of saw it coming. I mean talking to John was so much fun but I couldn’t really believe it would last. That doesn’t change the fact that I was MASSIVELY disappointed.
I had been ghosted and I didn’t know why. That’s the horrible thing about being ghosted. You always sit there wondering why and there’s no one that can answer that question for you because the one person who could would rather run than step up and have a conversation with you. I mean it’s not like I was asking him to call me or anything. I would have been happy with a simple message.
The only comfort you can get by being ghosted by someone is knowing that if they couldn’t even be bothered sending you a message to say bye, they weren’t worth using up all your energy on anyway.
